What is Patella Dislocation?

Patella dislocation occurs when the kneecap (patella) slips out of its normal position, usually towards the outer side of the knee.

It commonly affects:

  • Young athletes
  • Individuals with ligament laxity
  • Patients with anatomical predisposition
  • Sports or twisting injuries

Repeated dislocations can lead to chronic instability, cartilage damage, and early arthritis.

What is MPFL?

The Medial Patellofemoral Ligament (MPFL) is the main ligament that prevents the kneecap from slipping outward.

In most cases of patella dislocation, the MPFL is torn and requires reconstruction to restore stability.

MPFL Reconstruction – Surgical Technique

MPFL reconstruction is a minimally invasive ligament stabilization procedure performed arthroscopically or through small incisions.

✔ Step‑by‑Step Procedure

  1. Diagnostic Arthroscopy
The knee joint is examined to assess cartilage damage and associated injuries.

  2. Graft Harvesting
A small tendon graft (commonly hamstring tendon) is prepared.

  3. Tunnel Preparation
Small tunnels are created in the patella and femur at anatomical attachment points.

  4. Graft Placement
The graft is positioned to replicate the natural MPFL.

  5. Fixation
The graft is secured using specialized fixation devices to restore patellar stability.

  6. Stability Testing & Closure
Proper kneecap tracking is confirmed before wound closure.

Surgery typically lasts 60–90 minutes.

Advantages of MPFL Reconstruction

Restores patellar stability
Prevents recurrent dislocation
Protects cartilage from further damage
Minimally invasive approach
Early rehabilitation and recovery
Post‑Operative Recovery

0–2 Weeks

  • Knee brace support
  • Partial weight bearing
  • Swelling control
  • Gentle range‑of‑motion exercises

2–6 Weeks

  • Gradual increase in knee bending
  • Quadriceps strengthening

6–12 Weeks

  • Progressive strengthening
  • Balance and functional training

4–6 Months

  • Return to sports activities

Structured rehabilitation is essential for long‑term success.

Who Needs MPFL Reconstruction?
  • Recurrent patella dislocation
  • Persistent knee instability
  • Failed conservative treatment
  • Young active individuals
  • Associated cartilage injury
